So you’ve got your stash sorted, the weather’s actually cooperating for once, and you’re ready to spark up. One small question: where can you actually legally smoke weed in New West?
Turns out it’s the part most people get wrong. Buying weed in BC is easy. Finding a legal spot to consume it is the real puzzle, and if you’ve ever Googled “where can I smoke weed in New Westminster” and come away more confused than when you started, you’re not alone. Let’s clear the smoke.
In BC, you can generally smoke or vape cannabis anywhere you’re allowed to smoke tobacco. That sounds generous until you realize how few places that actually leaves you in a dense, walkable city like New West. Between provincial rules and the City’s own Smoking Control Bylaw, the “yes” list is short and the “no” list is long.
Parks. Basically all of them. This is the big one people miss. Provincial law specifically bans smoking and vaping cannabis in municipal, regional, and provincial parks, except in rare designated areas. That’s stricter than the tobacco rules. So Queen’s Park, Tipperary, Sapperton Landing, Westminster Pier Park, that scenic riverfront bench you had your eye on? Not a legal toke spot, no matter how good the view is.
The Quay. Yes, we know. The boardwalk is gorgeous and the Fraser rolling by is practically begging for a mellow moment. But it’s public parkland and waterfront, so the same park rules apply. Admire the river sober-eyed, or save it for later.
Within 7.5 metres of any building opening. New West’s bylaw prohibits smoking and vaping within 7.5 metres of any door, openable window, or air intake. In Uptown, Sapperton, or along Columbia Street, that radius covers… most of the sidewalk. Tricky.
Within 15 metres of park amenities. Playgrounds, sports fields, skate parks, picnic areas, water parks, wading and swimming pools, lawn bowling greens, the lacrosse box, off-leash dog areas. Keep at least 15 metres clear of all of them.
Restaurant and bar patios. Any outdoor patio where a business is serving food or drinks is off-limits. The brewery patio is not your smoking lounge.
Your car. Don’t. It’s illegal to consume cannabis in a vehicle, full stop. You can’t even drive if a passenger is consuming. Doesn’t matter if you’re parked. Just don’t do it.
Here’s the short list that survives all that:
Your own private property. The City’s smoking bylaw doesn’t reach into private residences, so your own home, and your own yard if you’ve got a detached place, is your safest bet. This is the realistic answer for most folks: light up at home like a responsible adult and skip the whole bylaw headache.
Sidewalks and public spaces where tobacco’s allowed, as long as you’re clear of every buffer zone above. In practice that means a quiet residential stretch well away from doorways, windows, parks, and patios. It exists. It’s just not where you’d expect.
Renting or living in a strata? Read the fine print. Both landlords and strata corporations are allowed to ban cannabis consumption (including smoking and vaping) on their property, and plenty of them do. Even where there’s no specific cannabis bylaw, most stratas have nuisance rules that cover drifting smoke. If your building says no, that “private residence” exemption doesn’t save you. Check your lease or strata bylaws before you assume your balcony is fair game.
Notice a theme? Where you can smoke weed in New West publicly is a minefield. The simplest fix is to skip the smoke entirely when in public. Edibles, beverages, capsules, and tinctures don’t produce smoke, don’t drift onto a neighbour’s balcony, and don’t put you 7.5 metres from a problem. You can enjoy them at home, no lighter required, no bylaw math.
That’s where we come in. Queens Cannabis is your local dispo, and we make the whole “where can I smoke in New West” question a non-issue.
Buying is the easy part. Let us handle that so you can enjoy the legal part comfortably, at home, with the good stuff already in hand.
Bylaws change, and this is a general guide, not legal advice. Always check the City of New Westminster’s current Smoking Control Bylaw and the Province of BC’s cannabis rules before you consume. When in doubt: keep it at home, keep it considerate, and keep it legal.
